What you should eat this weekend

The weather is rubbish, the news is depressing and depending on where you live, you’re probably facing some kind of COVID restrictions. If there’s anything more comforting than food, we don’t know it, which may speak to why we need MAN v FAT in the first place, but sssh. Here’s what you should eat this weekend.

Pumpkin is in season this month (obviously), and aside from being the show-off star of Halloween, there’s a lot you can make with a pumpkin. You can buy pumpkins in supermarkets now, so why not give a pumpkin soup a go like this one from BBC Food. Big pumpkins tend to be more watery and less flavourful than small pumpkins, so keep that in mind when you’re shopping, or swap out the pumpkin for butternut squash.

If you’re planning on eating out this weekend, show your support to one of the many small businesses who are offering free food to children over half term – stepping up where the government has shamefully failed. Footballer Marcus Rashford is collecting information about local efforts from restaurants, greengrocers, councils, cafes and much more, which you can find on his Twitter here

Sign his petition here too, which is a small way you can add your support. If you’re able to, you can also donate to FareShare, a charity supported by Marcus which helps vulnerable families, by heading to their website here.

Ever tried a bao bun? They’re steamed pillows of deliciousness which are filled with incredible Asian flavours. They look much more difficult to make than they actually are, and you can make them with ingredients that are easy enough to find. Check out BBC Good Food’s recipe for the buns here, and then fill them with one of the School of Wok’s amazing sounding fillings – braised pork belly or crispy aromatic duck, anyone?

This chicken and tomato pasta recipe is pretty much the easiest recipe you can make, but you’ll be so pleased with yourself if you make a batch for the week ahead. Just think, a hot pasta dish for lunch to warm you up with the absolute minimum of prep? Sign me up. Warren Nash has a recipe specifically for meal prep, which you can find here. You can keep it in the fridge for up to 4 days, and we’d heartily recommend sprinkling some cheese on top before you serve.
