Celebrating the delights of a good sandwich

The end of May saw Britain celebrate one of the country’s favourite grab-n-go’s – the trusty sandwich!

There’s a very small window of things better than tucking into a stack loaded with meat, salad and perfectly proportioned sauce. (Except maybe watching your team win the cup – I mean that’s pretty special too.) Let’s face it, life’s too short to eat boring sandwiches.

With a number of fast food chains closed at the moment, we’re missing our old favourites. Greggs cheese baguette, McDonalds The Sweet Chilli Chicken One wrap and Subway’s famous Meatball Marinara are just a few of the bites we’re mourning for.

So to celebrate British Sandwich Week, we’re showing you how you can recreate a healthier version of your go-to butty. PS. These are all adaptable to your own tastes and goals. Get creative as you like!

McDonalds – The Sweet Chilli Chicken One
This one’s about to be the Wrap of your Day! Firstly, grill a chicken breast in some low-calorie cooking spray and place it to one side. Spread a multigrain wrap with some lighter than light mayo and layer with cucumber slices and lettuce leaves. Pop on your slices of chicken, drizzle with a bit of sweet chilli sauce and you’re good to go.

Greggs – Mature Cheddar Cheese Salad Baguette
Probably most famous for their Steak Bake, Greggs is a sandwich legend. One of their most iconic sarnies is the Mature Cheddar Cheese Salad Baguette. To remake this British classic, grab a partly baked baguette and stick it in the oven. Cook until your desired crispiness, and let cool. Meanwhile, cut up your chosen cheese – whether it’s a mild or a super strong, get a few slices stacked and top with tomato, lettuce and cucumber.

Meatball Sub
Put on the map by Joey Tribbiani, the Meatball Marinara by Subway is one of the company’s biggest selling sandwiches. In our opinion, its meat to sauce ratio is bang on! This recipe takes slightly longer to make than a normal sandwich, so bear that in mind. To make, whip up some meatballs by blending up 250g 2% fat turkey mince, a sprinkle of thyme, garlic granules and a dash of Worcestershire sauce. Roll them into balls and fry in a pan for 10 minutes or until cooked through. Put the meatballs to one side and rustle up this quick marinara sauce. Drop the meatballs into the sauce to warm them through then you can start assembling your sandwich. It may take longer but it’s a game changer.

Pret’s Egg Mayo
Egg Mayo is notoriously known for having high calories and a high fat content but not over at MAN V FAT because we’re going to tell you how to make a low-fat version and it’s simple. Ready? Lighter than light mayo. The change in one ingredient is enough to save you hundreds of calories. To make, boil two eggs for 8 minutes. Peel off the shells and leave to cool. Once cool, mash with a fork and add a tablespoon of lighter than light mayo. Layer a slice of granary bread with mustard cress and the egg mixture then pop the lid on. Voila! Homemade egg sarnie.
